I use a fan all summer to block out noise from neighbors etc (I work an early shift and go to sleep earlier than most). Since it is not practical to use a fan in the winter, I bought the Marpac sound conditioner. It works really well-it sounds just like my fan (without a cold breeze). My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to have much in the way of choices for loudness. Other than that it's great.

Rating: - Everything we were looking for
We were looking for something to provide a little, white noise while our daughter sleeps. It's great for trips and did just the trick. We took it to the beach with us since she slept on an air mattress on the floor and we all slept better b/c of it.

Rating: - Effectively distracts from external noise
Marpac Sound Screen is a device that effectively distracts from outside noise. Perfect for the psychotherapy office or for night time sleeping. We have several in different rooms of the house and at the office.

Rating: - Worth the Price
I am an extremely light sleeper that's on an odd schedule, so I needed something to block out the normal sounds of people being awake and active in the house while I sleep. I'd tried some of the sleep CDs, keeping a fan on in the room and ear plugs. The CDs didn't work, the fans kept me too cold, and the ear plugs start to make my ears ache after awhile. The SleepMate has been a nearly perfect solution so far. I've had it about a month, and it works REALLY well to block most sounds. The only thing it hasn't been the best for is the sound of a door closing. Even when the TV in the living room hits extreme volumes, it blocks most of that, and if it doesn't drown it out completely, turning on some music while the SleepMate is still running solves that problem pretty well without deafening me in the process. This has been the best option I've found for helping me get some decent sleep, and it's even great when you just want a little peace during the day. I get to be in my own little world while it's on. I love it!
