Rating: - Cool for Beginner AND Experienced Cooks!
This a really good book! I grew up in Texas and my "culinary" instructors were my mom, aunt and grandmother. I know how to cook all the down home meals they cooked...by sight and memory. No measuring, etc. A massive amount of basic cooking terminology and proper skills didn't make the rounds in my family. This book gave me an education I was not expecting from a basic cookbook. And it was fun! I was kind of skeptical of a lot of the basic, broken down recipes...until I tried them. Basic is good! Very good! I plan on getting copies of this book to my college kids. Every cookbook fan should have a copy of this book in their library.

Three of my children recently graduated from college and are lucky to find the kitchen! I purchased several cookbooks, but this is the one wanted by all three. Very helpful information about food, storage, etc. Recipes are quick and easy to prepare. Excellent cookbook for beginners!

This was exactly what I was looking for in a beginning cookbook for a post-college culinary novice. The recipient found it to be full of useful, practical information for planning and executing daily menus.

Visually appealing; the photos could cause salivation in just about anyone.
Illustrations for basic kitchen know-how from holding a knife, folding an omelette, or setting the table.
Recipes keep up with current trends in cooking, from sundried tomatoes to tofu.
Detailed charts for steaming and and roasting veggies.
Detailed, illustrated instructions for making coffee, smoothies, and putting a well-balanced meal together.
Useful "Wisdom" pages for various foods and techniques.
The photos, the photos, the photos.
Cons
Difficult to read white writing on a color background.
White or yellow type on a white page is tough to read even for those under 50.
