Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Oscar nominee James Earl Jones stars as controversial paster Vernon Johns, one of the earliest voices of civil rights. In 1948, Johns served as the outspoken spiritual leader of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Incised at the racial injustice that prevaled the south, he was determined to fight foe equality for all African Americans. His refusal to accept segregation incited anger amongst local law enforcement and caused his family to fear for their lives. Johns held strong to his beliefs and encouraged his congregation to join him. But, the church council deemed him a troublemaker and he was voted out as pastor...only to be replaced by future civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An Excellent TRUE Story
This is one of the best stories ever on the beginning of the Civil Rights struggle in America. James Earl Jones does an excellent acting job as he portrays The Reverend Vernon Johns. A must-see.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great movie
I really admire Vernon Johns for what he
believed in get this you won't dissapointed.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An Important Film.
The story of Vernon Johns is little known but this film does an excellent job of providing details about this courageous man's life. There were many unsung heroes of the Civil Rights era, and Vernon Johns was definitely one of them. I will be incorporating this film into our museum education programming. Highly recommended!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An Untold Story Brought to Life
James Earl Jones gives life to the story of Dr. Vernon Johns, who preceded Dr. King in the Montgomery, Alabama pulpit that was to change history. There has rarely been a film that has so graphically detailed the savagery of racism in the deep South before the outbreak of the Civil Rights movement. Although he passed away in 1965, Dr. Johns deserves a prominent place in the history of the struggle for freedom and equality. This DVD is a must for the classroom, lest we ever slide back to the old levels of degradation.
