Product Description:
The fishing schooner We're Here has just pulled up a different kind of fish: rich 10-year-old Harvey Cheyne who tumbled off the side of a sleek ocean liner. Harvey will have to wait months before the We're Here returns to harbor months that will transform him from a spoiled whiner into an honorable young man - all because of the life lessons he learns from Manuel the humble fisherman who befriends him. From Rudyard Kipling's classic Captains Courageous thrills with its seagoing action grand scale and all-star cast. But what gives it full-masted magnificence is the chemistry between Freddie Bartholomew (Harvey) and Spencer Tracy (Manuel). Tracy won his first Best Actor Academy Award for his towering portrait of the father we all wish for: virile patient wise and protective. Set sail for cinema glory.Running Time: 112 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/CLASSIC UPC: 012569676749 Manufacturer No: 67674

Amazon.com essential video:
The award-winning 1937 version of Kipling's classic Captains Courageous finds spoiled-rotten brat Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) well on the way to becoming a horrible adult, under the illusion that money can buy all happiness. The little monster falls off a cruise ship, and is fished out of the drink by Portuguese fisherman Manuel (Spencer Tracy) and brought back to his fishing boat. Though the overprivileged lad initially chafes at being put to work aboard the smelly vessel, he eventually learns the value of a day's work and learns lessons in life that make him a functional person and bring him several steps closer to manhood. Despite Tracy's indeterminate accent, he excels in his role as the boy's friend, and enthusiastic performances from the rest of the cast bring this coming-of-age tale to life. It's a film that has lost none of its sentimental appeal (or occasional hamminess) over the years and should have an all-ages appeal to fans of Hollywood classics. --Jerry Renshaw

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Spoiled little Rich kid snob saved from himself by gruff old fisherman
This is a timeless tale of the little rich kid snob saved from himself by the gruff old man.

Its pretty good and involves a rich kid sneaking beer and smoking cigars, getting sick, and then falling overboard while puking over the side of the luxury cruise ship. He gets picked up by a Nantucket fishing boat that is just going out and won't be back to port for like 3 months. He tells everyone how rich he is, and take him back to port now, and his father will pay for the lost fishing, but of course no one believes him so he is forced to do chores and interact with the crew and of course its the best thing that could have happened to the little fellow.

Spencer Tracy plays the part of a Portuguese fisherman, and does a good job except I found his fake accent very jarring and unlifelike, although this did not stop him from winning an award for his performance,

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A film classic with humor, intelligent content and values
This is the first movie I remember seeing. I was probably five or six years old and the images in it have remained with me for the next 70 yrs. of life. Recently I saw it again for the first time and realized why it is such a "classic." The story is peopled by very human figures: a father and son who really care for each other but have disconnected through their affluent life style, the Grand Banks fishermen whose hardscrabble lives don't allow for any human warmth to show through, the simple faith of one of them who is strong in honor despite his great lack of more than subsistance living. Human compassion and its fleeting presence is etched against life on the rugged sailing ships completing their work no matter the hardship.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Still Gripping
I first watched this as a boy in the 1950's. The film was old then and moved me. It still does.

I think in this modern day when so many boys have too much stuff and not enough father - that they too act out.

One of the most mythic searches of all is for the father who really cares for us and in caring also asks us to be a man.

Freddie Bartholomew was a genius. His transformation from the spoiled brat to the young man is one of the wonders of film. The real footage of the schooner life can never be replicated.

The redemptive power of the story and the characters are mythic - I think I will watch it again tonight
