Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Saturday Night Live was not exactly in its heyday in the late 1990s. But despite some lackluster characters and casts, there are still a few moments that shine humorously through. Opening with Norm MacDonald's Bob Dole meeting the real Bob Dole (who with good spirit mocks himself), The Best of '96-'97 is off to a running start. This 92-minute clip tape contains a monologue by Chris Rock and skits with Tina Turner, Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Rosie O'Donnell, Robert De Niro, Pamela Anderson, and others. Highlights include a Jeopardy segment 'starring' Burt Reynolds, Sean Connery, and Jerry Lewis (played brilliantly by Martin Short); the cartoon 'Fun with Real Audio,' which uses the real voices of politicians with outrageous animation; the Roxbury guys, Steve and Doug Butabi; different actors auditioning for Star Wars, including Kevin Spacey as Christopher Walken doing a screen test for Han Solo; an A&E Biography of Tiger Woods; and Norm MacDonald as David Letterman. Some sketches, though, could be a little better--and shorter--such as 'The Joe Pesci Show' (although the real Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro confronting the fake ones is vaguely amusing), the Spartan cheerleaders doing Baywatch, and 'The Delicious Dish' on NPR. There may not have been many funny moments from the '96-'97 season, but the few that were are on this tape. --Jenny Brown

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Eh, it's Okay (3.5 stars)
I admit, I'm not the biggest SNL fan. I really liked the older ones with Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, and so on. The new ones are all right. "The Best of 1996-1997" has sketches that are very funny.....and others that really aren't that good.

I mostly got it for the "Joe Pesci Show." That has to be one of the funniest sketches I have ever seen. I also liked, "Celebrity Jeopardy," "Goat Boy on Charlie Rose," and the sketches with Norm McDonald as Bob Dole and the one with him as David Letterman. "Hey. you got any gum? Ha HA!" The "Star Wars" auditions were also pretty humerous. The other sketches I found not as funny. In fact, I fast-forward through most of them because they were so unfunny. Then again, that's just ME.

Was it worth the purchase? Well, for the sketches I mentioned, yeah, it was worth it. I just wish it didn't include the others, or if they were replaced ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic example of how funny SNL can be
This video is superb. I bought it from amazon a few months back and have watched it several times... definetly worth the minimal money I paid for it! it opens with a very funny Norm Macdonald impression of Bob Dole that gets interupted by... Bob Dole! and continues with some classics skits including... Spartans, The Roxbury Guys (With Tom Hanks), Star Wars Auditions, The Joe Peci show that gets interupted by... Joe Peci and a side splitting performance from Robert Deniro and one of the funniest Celebrity Jeopardy's ever with Burt Reynolds (Norm Macdonald), Jerry Lewis (Martin Short) and how could you have a celebrity jeopardy skit without Sean Connery! One of the cheapest SNL videos but also one of the best! You wont regret buying this comedy masterpiece!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - EXTREMELY FUNNY!! : )
This video Rocks!! Every skit on this movie is guaranteed to make you laugh or chuckle in some way. I wasn't sure if I was going to like this video as much because I'm more of a bigger fan of SNL's earlier stuff. Earlier as in Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, and Phil Hartman. But this video had me cracking up! I must have re-wound some of the parts 3 or 4 times because they were so damn funny! This video is well worth adding to your collection. It is highly recommended from an SNL "Junkie". Peace!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - If you love the 90's SNL you should get this tape!
This tape includes 92 min. of the most funniest sketches from the 96-97 season like the roxbury guys, MKG,the hilarious Chris Rock monologe, and the Spartan cheerleaders, but it also includes alot of celbs too, such as Alec Baldwin, Robert DeNiro,Bob Dole, Tom Hanks, Pamela Anderson, Chris Rock, Martin Short, Kevin Spacey,Rosie O'Donnel and Dana Carvey just to name a few. There really isnt anything on here not worth watching.I would deffently reccomend this to any SNL fan!
