This is an odd title for a composer who arguably wrote every song that mattered "except" "The Song Is You." It's good to see this one in print, but look for a used copy of the American Songbook series put out by the Smithsonian Institute (it's unlikely they'll have the money and resources to do any more of same) or the "Jazz Giants Play Harry Warren" (though if you're new to the tunes, I wouldn't always trust the player's improvisational notions--best to complement a collection such as the latter with a more "straightforward" anthology].
Composer compilations such as this make a lot of sense. They're resources that a collector, not to mention devotee of the American Songbook, can go to from time to time vs. the majority of CDs that get played a couple of times and filed away indefinitely. The Song Is Harry Warren gives us many of Harry Warren's greatest musical hits. I like this album because it often features artists other than the ones who sang these numbers in the films for which Harry Warren wrote. We get a generous twenty-five tracks on this CD and the diversity of artists makes it a true keeper.
Harry Roy & His Orchestra perform a well done rendition of "Lullaby Of Broadway;" this number is a strong beginning for the album and the musicians never miss a beat! The men who sing the words harmonize to perfection as well. Fletcher Henderson & His Orchestra perform a rousing rendition of one of Harry's earliest major hits entitled "Nagasaki." Moreover, listen for "I Found A Million Dollar Baby" performed with a fine piano accompaniment by Layton & Johnstone.
