Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
A prime candidate for cult status (it even spawned a sequel), this apocalyptic 1995 horror flick belongs in the darker corners of the comedy-horror sub-genre that includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mimic, and Phantoms--and like those movies it's a mixed blessing with some highlights worth savoring.

This one's got Christopher Walken in its favor, starring as the Angel Gabriel, who's really mad at God for allowing humans into heaven (because, you see, humans have souls and angels don't, and God plays favorites). Gabriel takes his anger out on the human race, coming to Earth to capture the soul of the most evil human alive in an effort to defeat the 'good' angels that remain in God's good graces. One of the good angels is played by Eric Stoltz, who captures the evil soul before Walken does and transfers it into the body of a little girl. Are you with us so far? Don't worry if you're not, because writer-director Gregory Widen filled The Prophecy with so many wild ideas that he didn't bother to connect them to a coherent plot.

Add Viggo Mortensen as the devil and Elias Koteas as a priest-turned detective who's tracking Walken and it's clear that Widen was attempting something ambitious here. He nearly succeeded, since The Prophecy jumpstarts its heaven-and-hell rivalry with enough action, humor, and intelligence to make the movie sufficiently entertaining. It was enjoyable enough to entice Walken back for the sequel, so if you're into this kind of thing, this one's a keeper. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A true classic
I haven't watched this in years. I love the story line.
When Gabriel (Christopher Walken) is on screen it's pure magic. I had forgotten Viggo Mortensen is in this film. This is long before his Lord of the Rings Fame.
The plot is after Lucifer and his angels were cast down a second war broke out in heaven lead by Gabriel. This war was due to some angels resenting humans being elevated above them. Gabriel refers to them as "Talking Monkeys".
Gabriel believes since humans are so much better at warfare if he can capture the darkest human soul that ever existed he can win the war against God.
Watch this one only. The others in the series are pretty bad.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Disappointing
It's not a horrible movie, but after all the good things I heard about it, like it was one of Christopher Walken best movies, I can only be disappointed. So yeah, Mr Walken is great in this movie, but you only see him for about 20 minutes. The rest is just boring. I'm not the kind of person who needs explosions and special effects to be entertained, but there really is not much going on. The plot isn't deep and it's stretched over an hour and a half.

I wonder how that movie got three or four sequels. I heard the quality got worse every time... I'm glad I only got this one.

Well, if you want some great Walken, get the Kings of New York or the Deer Hunter

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Who Says An Angel Has To Love Mankind
I bought this a couple of months ago and finally bought the last two to complete my collection of this great storyline saga. The story is an excellent concept I think a lot of people are taught to believe that angels are created to love and protect mankind but could jealousy and anger ever cause an angel to rebel against these doctrines. That is pretty much what you have here the arch-angel Gabriel dissatisfied that God has put mankind before angels has decided to rebel against the other angels who are still loyal to the doctrines. Gabriel now comes to earth to capture a dark soul to help him with his battle in Heaven but some of the loyal angels are also on earth and are trying to stop this plan. The actors for this movie were incredible Christopher Walken as Gabriel was the perfect choice and Eric Stoltz played as a great angel who seemed tired of both fighting his fellow brothers and the war in Heaven. ...
