Amazon.com:
A mixed bag that received mixed reviews when released in 1994, this lavish film works overtime to honor the spirit and style of the vintage pulp novels and radio shows that made The Shadow a household name in the 1930s and '40s. Alec Baldwin plays the Shadow, a.k.a. Lamont Cranston, who arrives in New York from his decadent life in Tibet, fully reformed and disciplined in his ability 'to cloud men's minds.' A crime fighter who lurks in the dark recesses of the city, the Shadow faces his most deadly challenge when Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the last surviving descendant of Genghis Khan, hatches a plot to conquer the world. The scheme involves a madman (Tim Curry), a hapless scientist (Ian McKellen), and various traps designed to catch and kill the Shadow, who must also contend with his blossoming romance with Margo Lane (Penelope Ann Miller), a slender beauty capable of a little mind play of her own. The movie's art deco production design turns out to be a scene-stealer when the plot drags, and in the title role Baldwin is never given enough good material to create a compelling character. Still, The Shadow is true to the legacy that inspired it, admirably avoiding any conspicuous compromise of its 1930s style and setting. If you can't get into the story, you're sure to be hooked by the look of the production, which is never less than dazzling. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Disappointed in Product Description
I have one big complaint about Amazon. Rarely do they specify whether the movies are full screen or wide screen. For my preferences I never buy anything but widescreen. So this movie rates four stars from me but only got an official three stars because it is full screen. You would think that they would at least include that important distinction, in the description.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A flawed, yet very enjoyable, cinematic take on the classic pulp hero
This is a flawed, yet very enjoyable, cinematic take on Walter Gibson's classic pulp hero, The Shadow.

It has the wrong director, Highlander's Russel Mulcahy, who has a nice visual instinct, but tends towards the slapdash as a storyteller. It has far too much of a camp sensibility and doesn't take its source material seriously enough, though thankfully not descending as far as the sixties Batman TV show. And it uses magnificent actor Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf, Magneto, Richard III...) in a tragically boring role.

But it gets a lot more right than it gets wrong.

Alec Baldwin is amazing as Lamont Cranston, the millionaire who spends his nights busting crime as The Shadow, and the visual take on the character is perfection. I very much enjoyed the way Cranston's face actually changes its aspect when he touches his inner darkness and becomes The Shadow, his eyes turning glittering ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A Real Stinkeroo
This movie was recommended to me as being mindless but fun. In fact it's all but unwatchably bad. Horrible. Awful, awful, awful script; wooden, terrible, acting. But since it takes place in the 1930s there are lots of nice cars though. I've seen worse movies than this one, but no worse movie has ever been this bad, it's clear that they had a lot of money to spend, but they put it into the sets, not the plot. Just, wow, I mean, I really wanted to like it too, since I like the magazine stories but... Yuuuucccchhhh. A major disappointment.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Fun superhero film, good period peice
The Shadow is one of the oldest superheroes, predating even Batman. This film wisely keeps to his roots.

Set in New York in the 1930s Alec Baldwin's Shadow fights a crazed descendant of Ghengis Khan. The sets and costumes are first rate, the performances are campy but fun.

It's a good light superhero film with thrills and laughs. It makes you wish for more.
